Animal Birth Control & Rabies Vaccination
This is a scientifically monitored and proven project designed to protect the city of Jaipur from rabies. Rabies is transmitted from the saliva of infected animals. There is a resident population of dogs who live on the streets of Jaipur. When their population is unstable there is a lot of fighting between dogs and they tend to bite each other, which is a fast way to transmit rabies between dogs. They fight for territory and also for breeding. Neutering the female dogs helps to stabilise the dog population size and minimises fighting for territory and breeding. So far over 96000 female dogs have been neutered through this programme.
Rabies vaccination is another key factor in the successful eradication of rabies, protecting the dogs and therefore other species including humans in the city. So far over 164000 dogs have been vaccinated through our programme. Rabies kills about 25000 people in India each year, 95% of human rabies cases come from infected dog bites.
This is a properly planned project with areas of the city of Jaipur being mapped out and the dogs of each area being monitored and attended to in sequence. This project is proven to help the city in a number of ways… it protects the public and other animals from rabies and also it keeps the dog population of the city stable, which improves the welfare of the street dogs.
Our programme was started in 1994 it is now the third largest in the world. Because of this programme, Jaipur is currently rabies free and our programme has averted more than 500 human deaths. More than 80% of the female dogs in the city have been neutered and vaccinated and more than 77% of the street dog population has received a rabies vaccination.
